Understanding BNM Rate Types

Middle rate is the reference rate between the buying and selling rates. It is commonly used for general comparison, analysis, reporting and informational currency conversion.

Buying rate generally refers to the rate at which a bank or financial institution may buy foreign currency. It is useful when comparing the value of foreign currency being converted back into Malaysian Ringgit.

Selling rate generally refers to the rate at which a bank or financial institution may sell foreign currency. It is useful when estimating the Malaysian Ringgit cost of purchasing foreign currency.

What Is SDR (Special Drawing Rights)?

Special Drawing Rights (SDR) is an international reserve asset created by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to supplement the official foreign exchange reserves of its member countries. It is not a physical currency and cannot be used directly for everyday purchases or commercial transactions. Instead, its value is determined by a basket of five major international currencies: the US dollar (USD), euro (EUR), Chinese yuan (CNY), Japanese yen (JPY), and British pound sterling (GBP). SDR is primarily used by central banks, governments, and international financial institutions for reserve management, international settlements, and financial assistance programmes. On this dashboard, SDR exchange rates are provided for informational and analytical purposes alongside other currencies published by Bank Negara Malaysia.

Note: Because SDR is not a tradable market currency, Bank Negara Malaysia publishes only its middle (reference) rate. SDR is therefore unavailable when Buying Rate or Selling Rate is selected.
