How to Read This Dashboard

Income values are shown in RM per month. Median income represents the middle household income, while mean income represents the average. Mean income is usually higher because very high-income households can pull the average upward.

Understanding Malaysia’s State Household Income Statistics

This dashboard presents official household income statistics by Malaysian state using data published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia. Household income data helps users understand regional living standards, purchasing power, economic development patterns and differences in income levels across Malaysia.

The dashboard is designed for businesses, researchers, logistics planners, investors, students and policy observers who need a practical way to compare state income trends. For companies studying regional markets, household income can provide useful context for consumer demand, wage conditions, affordability and regional economic strength.

Mean Household Income vs Median Household Income

Mean Household Income

Mean household income is the average household income. It is calculated by adding all household incomes together and dividing by the number of households. Mean income can be affected by very high-income households, so it may rise sharply when top incomes increase.

Median Household Income

Median household income is the middle value when households are arranged from lowest income to highest income. Half of households earn below the median and half earn above it. Median income is often useful for understanding the income level of a typical household because it is less affected by extreme high-income values.

When mean income is much higher than median income, it may suggest that higher-income households are pulling the average upward. For this reason, both measures should be reviewed together instead of relying on only one figure.

The ranking table appears in compare mode and shows how the selected states compare in the latest available year.

The highest and lowest value cards should be interpreted based on the selected measure and filters. They do not necessarily describe overall prosperity by themselves because household income should also be considered together with cost of living, inflation, employment, household size and other social indicators.
